iPhone 15 Pro Review: first impressions of Apple’s newest flagship smartphone

As a long-time Apple enthusiast and owner (I’ve owned almost every iPhone Pro model, starting at the 11 Pro), I recently purchased the iPhone 15 Pro, the latest iPhone in Apple’s premium flagship lineup.

The first thing that struck me about the iPhone 15 Pro was its design. Apple has replaced the stainless steel frame of the previous generation with a sleek titanium body, giving it a more elegant and refined look. This change not only enhances the aesthetics but also reduces the weight, making it a delight to hold and carry around. Despite its more compact size compared to the Pro Max, it feels every bit as luxurious and well-crafted.

The 6.1-inch OLED screen is a standout feature, offering vibrant colors and crisp details. It’s bright enough to use comfortably even in direct sunlight, a testament to Apple’s ongoing commitment to screen quality. This display, combined with the new A17 Pro chip, makes for a responsive and smooth user experience, whether I’m browsing the web, watching videos, or playing graphics-intensive games.

Apple’s shift from Lightning to USB-C in the iPhone 15 Pro is a welcome change, making it compatible with a wider range of chargers and accessories. This transition aligns with the broader tech ecosystem, where USB-C has become the standard, albeit a forced one. It’s also a nod to consumer convenience, as it allows for faster charging and data transfer speeds.

The camera system on the iPhone 15 Pro is impressive. While it shares the same primary and ultrawide lenses with the Pro Max, it differs in the telephoto lens, offering a 3x optical zoom instead of 5x. Despite this, the images I captured were stunning, with rich details and accurate colors. The 48-megapixel main sensor provides flexibility in various lighting conditions, and the ability to shoot full 48MP photos in ProRaw format is a boon for photography enthusiasts.

Battery life is another area where the iPhone 15 Pro shines. It easily lasts a full day on a single charge, even with heavy usage. This endurance, combined with the convenience of both wired and wireless charging options, ensures that the phone is always ready when I need it.

However, it’s not without its drawbacks. The most notable is the absence of the 5x optical zoom found in the Pro Max, which might be a dealbreaker for some photography enthusiasts. Additionally, while the iPhone 15 Pro is more repairable than its predecessors, Apple’s software locks still pose a challenge for third-party repairs.

In conclusion, the iPhone 15 Pro is an exceptional device that strikes a perfect balance between size, performance, and price. It’s an ideal choice for those who prefer a more compact phone without compromising on the features and capabilities of a high-end smartphone. The improvements in design, display, camera, and USB-C integration make it a compelling option for both Apple loyalists and new users alike. Despite a few shortcomings, the iPhone 15 Pro stands out as a remarkable piece of technology, offering a premium experience in a more accessible form factor.
