Washington Football Team will unveil new name on February 2

WASHINGTON (WJLA) — The waiting is almost over.

The Washington Football Team announced on Tuesday that it will reveal its new name on Wednesday, February 2, during the week before the Super Bowl.

The new name will officially be announced live on the TODAY show.

Washington Football Team president Jason Wright also wrote on the team website on Tuesday that the new name will not be Wolves or RedWolves, due to trademarks held by other teams.

Back in September, during a podcast with ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Washington Football Team co-CEO Tanya Snyder said that the final eight names in contention were Armada, Presidents, Brigade, Redhawks, Commanders, RedWolves, Defenders and Football Team.

“The Team has to walk a very fine line,” John Ourand of the Sports Business Journal told 7News sports reporter Scott Abraham. “Coming out with the excitement of a new name, while still trying to grab hold of it’s past.”

Washington, which is 6-10 this season, has played two seasons under the Football Team moniker.

The team has been sharing a look at its 18-month rebranding process with a video series on the team website. The team said it received nearly 40,000 fan submissions for the new team name.

The timing of the announcement comes just days after Washington was eliminated from playoff contention and Eagles QB Jalen Hurts narrowly avoided injury after a stadium railing collapsed and fans fell on to the field right next to him.
